Nigeria, U.S. strengthen security ties during AFRICOM commander’s visit

Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral security cooperation following a visit by the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Gen. Dagvin Anderson, to Abuja on February 8–9.

During the visit, Gen. Anderson paid courtesy calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and held high-level engagements with the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd); the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; and other senior government and military officials.

Discussions focused on shared security priorities and the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the United States in countering terrorist organizations that threaten Nigeria, the wider region, and global security. The leaders also explored opportunities to expand military training, force development, real-world training initiatives, and joint exercises, as well as other specialized capabilities the United States can offer in support of Nigeria’s security objectives.

As part of the visit, Gen. Anderson toured the joint U.S. Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which enhances Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capacity and supports real-time operational outcomes. He engaged with senior Nigerian security officials and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigerian-led solutions through intelligence sharing and technical advisory assistance aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s independent operational capabilities.
