India AI summit opens new tech path for Nigeria

India is set to host a landmark global technology gathering, the India–AI Impact Summit 2026, positioning Nigeria and other developing countries at the centre of emerging artificial intelligence governance.

The summit, scheduled for February 19–20, 2026, in New Delhi, will be the first global AI summit to be held in the Global South. It was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the France AI Action Summit.

India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, said on Friday that the event marked a major shift in global AI conversations, with far-reaching implications for Nigeria and Africa.

According to Singh, the summit goes beyond a routine meeting of technology experts and policymakers, as it aims to confront pressing challenges such as job displacement, data sovereignty and the widening digital divide driven by rapid AI expansion.

He noted that Prime Minister Modi’s guiding philosophy for the summit, “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” — welfare and happiness for all — mirrors the aspirations of many African countries seeking inclusive technological growth.

At the core of the summit are three guiding principles known as the “Three Sutras”: People, Planet and Progress. These pillars focus on human-centred AI, environmentally responsible innovation and economic growth through wider access to AI tools.

The framework further expands into seven “Chakras” covering areas such as human capital development, social inclusion, safe and trusted AI systems, scientific advancement and economic growth.

Singh said a major highlight of the summit is the push to treat AI resources as shared development tools rather than assets controlled by a few advanced economies.

He explained that the IndiaAI Mission, which underpins the summit, seeks to build large-scale public AI infrastructure and make it accessible to partner countries, similar to how India previously shared its digital public goods such as Aadhaar and its real-time payment system.

This approach, he said, could allow Nigerian developers, startups and public institutions to deploy AI solutions without the high costs of proprietary technologies and foreign computing infrastructure.

The summit will also showcase practical AI applications in agriculture, healthcare, education, energy and climate resilience — sectors that align closely with Nigeria’s development priorities.

Singh said discussions would focus on how AI could improve crop yields for smallholder farmers, enhance disease detection in poorly equipped clinics, personalise learning for students and strengthen disaster early warning systems.

Unlike previous technology conferences, the India–AI Impact Summit is designed as an action-driven platform, with commitments expected in the form of a leaders’ declaration and multilateral cooperation frameworks.

India’s decision to host the summit, Singh added, reflects its determination to amplify the voice of the Global South in setting global AI norms, rather than allowing rules to be dictated solely by advanced economies.

He said this position resonates with Nigeria’s long-standing call for reforms in global governance institutions and greater African representation in international decision-making.

A strong Nigerian delegation from government, the private sector and academia, Singh said, would be both symbolically and technically important.

He added that the summit could open doors for bilateral cooperation, including joint development of open-source AI tools, co-creation of datasets reflecting African realities, university research partnerships and startup collaborations in fintech, healthtech and agritech.

Singh said the outcomes of the summit would shape whether artificial intelligence deepens global inequalities or becomes a tool for broad-based human development.

“The India–AI Impact Summit 2026 is not just India’s achievement,” he said. “It is a defining moment for the Global South and an opportunity for Nigeria and Africa to shape how technology serves humanity.”
