Hon. Rotimi sponsors one-year health insurance for House Press Corps, enrolls over 100 journalists in FCT scheme

Members of the House of Representatives Press Corps have been enrolled into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) following the sponsorship of a one-year coverage by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Akin Rotimi.
The symbolic presentation of enrollment identity cards took place at the National Assembly Complex, with stakeholders describing the intervention as a milestone in strengthening journalists’ welfare and advancing Nigeria’s push toward universal health coverage.
Speaking at the event, Rotimi said the initiative reflects the commitment of the 10th Assembly to deepen engagement with the media and prioritise the wellbeing of journalists covering legislative activities.
He acknowledged the support of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, noting that the Press Corps plays a vital role in Nigeria’s legislative process.
“We consider them a very critical stakeholder in the legislative affairs of this country,” Rotimi said, highlighting the demanding nature of journalism, especially for reporters who work long hours covering parliamentary proceedings.
“You do a lot of work, sometimes up until 9 or 10 at night. You get home exhausted and often neglect your own health while striving to fulfil your constitutional mandate. But you must also look out for yourselves. We need you strong and healthy to continue to discharge your duties effectively.”
He stressed the importance of preventive healthcare, urging beneficiaries to prioritise routine medical screening and early detection, adding that the initiative is designed to promote sustainable healthcare access and encourage wider participation in health insurance schemes.
“What you’re seeing today is a step in the direction that we hope others will take the cue from,” he added.
In her remarks, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Baba-Gaba Adam, described the sponsorship as a significant contribution to expanding healthcare access.
