EBOLA: FG urged to recruit more health workers

The Federal Government has been called upon to as a matter of urgency, recruit additional health workers with a view to curtailing the spread of the epidemic (Ebola Virus).

The North East Zone Coordinator, Port health Services, Maiduguri, of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Lawal Attah Danja, made the call at a one day sensitization workshop on Ebola Virus Disease held in Yola yesterday.

Danja, who lauded President GoodLuck Jonathan for the quick release of intervention funds for the control and containment of the disease in the country, urged other well to do citizens to emulate the president by donating generously in supporting the fight against the disease.

He observed that, the prompt action of President Jonathan, federal ministry of health and other sister agencies would assist in possible steps torwards effectively containing the threat of the killer virus in the country.

“With prompt action by President Jonathan and federal ministry of health to curtail the spread of Ebola Virus in the country, there is also need for recruiting more health workers.

“In addition, there is also need for collective support from well-meaning Nigerians to collaborate with government in containing this virus out of the country.” Danja said

He lamented that so far, there was no any suspected record of the disease in the North East adding that educating people about the disease was one of the major preventive measure in curtailing the spread of the killer disease.

However, in his paper presentation, state coordinator, Port Health Services, Yola, Mr. Bamai Daniel, advised the general public especially travelers to avoid making contact with infected patients, if any, because that is the major cause of infection.

Daniel, in his paper presented with the title: ‘Frequently Asked Questions on Ebola Virus Disease”, cautioned health workers to strictly follow the World Health Organisations guide and recommendations while traveling to the affected areas.

According to the state Coordinator, people should avoid unnecessary travel and stop speculation about the disease.

“Travelers should avoid all contact with infected patients, while people should always engage in personal hygiene.” Daniel urged.

Remarking, a federal civil servant, Alhaji Abdulrazak Halliru said the sensitization workshop is timely considering the lack of knowledge on the disease by the public and it will go a long way in addressing the ignorance about it.
