Yobe state governor, Alh. (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam has called on parents to accept the responsibility of the upbringing and education of their children and shy away from the prevailing culture of throwing children into the streets, given all the dangers associated with it, in the name of acquiring Qur’anic education.
He made the call recently, on the occasion at the opening ceremony of the National Conference on the free-hand Qur’an writing competition, organized by the Yobe state ministry of religious affairs, in collaboration with the state university, which took place at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida secretariat complex, Damaturu, the state capital.
He was responding to a request by the state commissioner ministry of religious affairs, for government intervention in the promotion of ‘Tsangaya’ education in the state.
He pointed out that in as much as the state government is willing to take the necessary steps and deploy resources within its available limits to implement intervention programs towards improving the traditional system and eradicating the associated begging culture, such scheme can only succeed with the cooperation and collaboration efforts of all stakeholders particularly parents.
He therefore emphasized on the crucial need for the ministry of religious affairs and the Islamic scholars to focus seriously on enlightening parents and awakening them on their obligation towards the upbringing and education of their children.
