Nigeria’s First Lady has warned members of the National Assembly of Nigeria that while they possess constitutional authority to legislate for millions of Nigerians, they remain ultimately accountable to God for every law they pass and every decision they make.
She delivered the message at the dedication and commissioning of the newly completed National Assembly Chapel in Abuja, a project conceived during the Sixth Assembly and whose foundation was laid in the Eighth Assembly by former Speaker Yakubu Dogara before its eventual completion under the current leadership.
Describing the occasion as both historic and deeply personal, the First Lady reflected on her 12-years tenure in the Senate, recalling how Christian lawmakers previously gathered in committee rooms for fellowship due to the absence of a dedicated place of worship.
She said the Chapel should stand as a constant reminder that beyond political power lies divine accountability, praying that it would inspire humility, courage, and compassion in leadership.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the commissioning as a spiritual milestone for Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that governance must be guided by conscience and divine wisdom.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu noted that the Chapel symbolises lawmakers’ submission to God’s authority, especially in moments when partisan interests threaten national priorities.
Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon called for renewed commitment to national unity, while Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, delivered the exhortation and led prayers for Nigeria’s leaders.
