Iran conflict: U.S. Embassy issues security advisory for Abuja

Date:

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of possible protests in Abuja on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing tensions linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
In a notice shared on its official social media platforms, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja said there is a “high potential” for demonstrations in the Federal Capital Territory. The mission noted that previous protests by certain groups have, at times, led to violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.

As a precaution, the Embassy strongly advised American citizens residing in Abuja to remain indoors throughout the day.

The mission also urged U.S. nationals to avoid areas where protests may be taking place, steer clear of crowds, and exercise caution if they unexpectedly find themselves near large gatherings. Citizens were encouraged to monitor local media for updates, stay aware of their surroundings, and keep a low profile.

Other safety recommendations included reviewing personal security plans, ensuring mobile phones are fully charged in case of emergencies, carrying proper identification at all times, and staying alert in public spaces such as shopping centres, cinemas and places of worship. The Embassy further advised varying travel routes and times to reduce predictability and familiarising oneself with emergency exits when entering buildings.

Despite the alert, the Consular Sections of the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open, according to the statement. The mission said further updates would be shared through its official channels as necessary.
