Zuru tragedy: Kebbi govt donates N10m to parents of deceased sisters

The Kebbi state government has donated Ten Million Naira to the parents of the two sisters who allegedly died as a result of drug misapplication at the General Hospital in Zuru.

The death of the two sisters, aged six and three, was reported to have occurred on the 18th of this month due to alleged negligence on the part of some nurses at the hospital.

The two nurses alleged to have committed the act are already in police custody, while investigation to unravel the circumstances of the children’s death continues.

In an attempt to demonstrate its seriousness on the matter, the Kebbi state government had set up a 9-man probe panel headed by the Commissioner of Information and Culture Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK. The Committee, which has since swung into action, will submit its report to the state governor within a week.

The donation of the N10 million, according to the Chairman of the Investigation Committee, was necessitated by the desire of the state government to assist the family in dealing with the trauma of the tragedy.

Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, who spoke at the handing over of the money at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru yesterday, remarked that the money was not meant to totally assuage the parents feeling of loss.

He said no amount of money would replace the irreparable loss but hoped that the gesture would go a long way to give some sense that the family had not totally been neglected.

The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Mikailu Sami, urged the parents to continue to see their travail as an inescapable will of the Almighty Allah.

He commended Governor Nasir Idris for his relentless passion to help people in need and for taking immediate measures to deal with the deaths of the sisters.

The Emir appealed to medical and other health workers to update their knowledge through constant training and retraining programs in order to continue to be relevant in a fast changing world.

He warned that it is unacceptable for health workers to be so negligent as to endanger lives recklessly.
