Nigeria awaits clearance for 55 ambassadors-designate

 

Nigeria’s ministry of foreign affairs says it has received approval from 10 countries for the ambassadors-designate out of the 65 posted by President Bola Tinubu in March.

This leaves a total of 55 ambassadors-designate.awaiting diplomatic clearance.

A statement by Kimibie Ebienfa, spokesperson of the ministry, said responses are still being awaited from other countries.

“I wish to inform you that the process of receiving agreements from the countries the ambassadors-designate are posted to is ongoing,” the statement reads.

“We have received agreements from the United Kingdom, France, United States of America, Ireland, Qatar, Benin Republic, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, Sierra Leone, among others.”

There has been unverified claims in the media that Germany and Mexico have withheld diplomatic clearance for Femi Fani-Kayode and Reno Omokri, respectively, who were posted there by President Tinubu.

In September 2023, Tinubu recalled of all career and non-career ambassadors serving in different countries.
