The Emerging Progressives Leaders’ Forum (EPLF) has lauded Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, alongside party leaders in the state, for adopting the direct primaries mode of elections in selecting the candidate for 2027 general elections.
The Forum described the move as a bold and progressive step toward deepening democracy.
In a statement jointly signed by the Forum’s National Coordinator, Barrister Johnson Preye-Aganaba, and its Secretary, Alhaji Abdulkarim Ibrahim, the group commended the leadership of the party in Nasarawa for what it termed a “forward-thinking and inclusive decision” that prioritizes the interests of grassroots members.
According to the statement, the adoption of direct primaries will enhance internal democracy by allowing all registered party members to participate directly in the selection of candidates, rather than limiting the process to a few delegates.
The Forum stressed that such a system will not only strengthens party structures but also builds trust and confidence among members.
“The decision to embrace direct primaries is a clear demonstration of commitment to transparency, fairness, and accountability. It ensures that aspirants emerge through a credible and widely accepted process, thereby reducing internal conflicts and post-primary disputes,” the statement read.
The group further noted that the move aligns with ongoing calls for electoral reforms across the country, adding that it sets a commendable example for other states and political parties to follow.
The Forum also highlighted the potential of the direct primaries system to curb imposition of candidates, a challenge it said has long undermined democratic values within political parties, noting that it gives ordinary members a voice, the process is expected to produce candidates who enjoy genuine popular support.
While applauding Governor Sule’s leadership, the Forum urged stakeholders to ensure that the implementation of the direct primaries system is conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and well-organized manner to achieve the desired outcomes.
It also called on party faithful in Nasarawa state to take full advantage of the opportunity by actively participating in the process, emphasizing that their involvement is crucial to the success of the initiative.
Reaffirming its commitment to promoting good governance and democratic ideals, the Emerging Progressives Leaders’ Forum pledged to continue supporting policies and actions that advance credible elections and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The group concluded by expressing optimism that the adoption of direct primaries in Nasarawa State would not only foster unity within the party but also contribute to the overall stability and growth of the democratic process in the country.
