The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its readiness to welcome participants, enthusiasts, stakeholders and lovers of athletics to the fourth edition of the Ogun Women Run, a women-focused 5km race scheduled to take place on April 11, 2026, in Abeokuta.
The assurance was given by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, when the organisers of the race paid a courtesy visit to his office.
During the visit, the Managing Director of Brussel Sports Management Limited, owners of the race, Mrs. Yetunde Johnson expressed appreciation to the state government for creating an enabling environment for sports development and for its pivotal support in the successful staging of the first three editions of the race.
Mrs Johnson acknowledged the consistent role played by the state government as host and revealed that the National Sports Commission, alongside other private sector partners, have also come on board to further enhance the prestige and overall impact of the 2026 edition.
“We are deeply grateful to the Ogun State Government for the tremendous support given to the Ogun Women Run since its inception. The government’s commitment to sports development has provided the foundation for the race to grow steadily over the years, and we are confident that with this continued partnership, the fourth edition will be even more successful.”
In his response, the Sports Commissioner commended the MD of Brussel Sports and her team for their vision and dedication in sustaining the women-focused initiative, describing the race as a commendable platform for promoting women’s participation in sports and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
He assured that the administration of Dapo Abiodun remains fully committed to initiatives that promote sports development and community engagement across the state.
The commissioner further highlighted the state’s growing reputation as a hub for major sporting events, referencing preparations for the 2025 National Sports Festival, the Confederation of African Athletics U-18 and U-20 Championships and the West Africa Para Games as clear indications of the government’s determination to position Ogun as a leading destination for sports in Nigeria and beyond.
“The Ogun State Government remains open to initiatives that will further develop sports and create opportunities for our people. Events like the Ogun Women Run align with our vision of using sports as a tool for empowerment, unity and improved wellbeing,” he said.
