Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has urged religious leaders across Nigeria to intensify prayers for the country and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that peace remains the foundation for sustainable development.
Buni made the call during the first phase of an engagement with over 800 chief imams of Friday Jumu’at mosques in the state, where he warned that without peace, meaningful progress would remain elusive.
“There would be no meaningful development without peace,” the governor said, adding that collective support for national leadership was crucial to safeguarding the country’s future.
He noted that Nigeria requires divine intervention to overcome both internal and external threats, emphasizing the role of clerics in fostering unity and stability through prayers.
Reflecting on Yobe State’s past during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, Buni recalled the widespread destruction, loss of lives, and displacement of residents, cautioning against a relapse into violence.
“We cannot afford to return to such dark days,” he said. “We must continue to support our leaders to ensure Nigeria remains united and peaceful.”
The governor expressed appreciation for the relative peace currently enjoyed in the state and pledged continued support for federal efforts to preserve stability.
He further highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance on the African continent, noting that many countries look up to it as a beacon of hope.
“They have no other country to call home except Nigeria,” Buni said. “It is our responsibility as citizens to pray for lasting peace and prosperity, and for God to guide our leaders.”
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs, Babagana Malam Kyari, said the meeting was convened to reinforce the role of religious leaders in praying for national unity and leadership.
Kyari added that the second phase of the engagement would involve pastors and church leaders across the state, as part of efforts to promote interfaith support for peace and development.
