Lassa Fever Claims Woman in Ibadan as Oyo Activates Emergency Response

The Oyo State Government has confirmed a fatal case of Lassa fever at the University College Hospital, where a 44-year-old woman died while receiving treatment.

Health authorities disclosed that the patient passed away on April 11, 2026, while laboratory confirmation of the infection was received two days later.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the government immediately activated its emergency response mechanisms, including the Incident Management System, to contain the situation and coordinate response efforts.

She noted that contact tracing has commenced, with all individuals who had contact with the deceased being identified and placed under monitoring.

Arrangements are also underway to ensure a safe and dignified burial.

Ajetunmobi urged residents to promptly seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as persistent fever, weakness, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unexplained bleeding, stressing that early detection significantly improves survival chances.

She explained that Lassa fever is primarily transmitted through exposure to food or household items contaminated by infected rodents, but can also spread through contact with bodily fluids of infected persons, particularly in healthcare settings without proper precautions.

The commissioner advised residents to maintain strict hygiene practices, including proper food storage, waste disposal, and regular handwashing, while also taking steps to prevent rodent infestation in homes.

She assured the public that there is no cause for panic, noting that surveillance has been intensified across the state and health facilities placed on high alert to prevent further spread.

“The situation is under control. Lassa fever is preventable and treatable, especially when detected early,” she said.
