The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that he has remained a dedicated member of the party since its inception in 1998.
Speaking at a national stakeholders’ meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, Wike congratulated the National Working Committee (NWC) on its emergence at the last National Convention and praised what he described as the “bold step” of reclaiming the party’s headquarters for official business.
Wike dismissed rumours of his defection, stating: “Since 1998 till now, I have been a member of the PDP, and I will not leave the party.”
He emphasised that holding the meeting at the National Secretariat underscored the legitimacy of the current leadership, challenging any rival factions to do the same.
The minister urged the NWC to move beyond past crises and establish a strong committee to reach out to members who recently defected. He noted that many left due to “uncertainty” surrounding the party’s future and issues related to INEC documentation, but argued that with stability restored, they should be encouraged to return.
Wike also called on the NWC to adopt a new culture of openness and transparency to correct what he described as “anomalies or mistakes” made by previous leaderships.
Addressing party leaders, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki and several former governors, Wike cautioned against dismissing defectors.
“It is wrong to say those who have defected should be allowed to go. Chairman and your team must ensure you engage with them. There is still room for them to return,” he said.
On pending legal matters involving the party’s leadership and internal disputes, Wike expressed confidence in the party’s legal team, noting that “our lawyers are doing great work,” and voiced optimism that the PDP would continue to secure favourable judgments.
The meeting concluded with a call for unity, as Wike urged party leaders to demonstrate a clear and improved leadership style to regain public trust and restore confidence among members.
