Some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Rivers State have condemned recent attacks on journalists in Port Harcourt, describing the incidents as a direct assault on press freedom and democratic values.
Leaders of the groups made their position known during a news briefing held on Monday in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Prince Edegbuo of the Social Development Integrated Center (Social Action) said journalists working with media organisations such as Channels Television and Classic FM had been targeted by hoodlums in recent times.
He identified flashpoints for the attacks to include Garrison, Abali Park, Rumukuroshi, Waterline, and Rumuokoro areas, alleging that these locations had been taken over by criminals who assault journalists and residents, dispossessing them of phones and other valuables.
Edegbuo warned that the growing trend could have far-reaching implications for the credibility of the 2027 General Elections.
According to him, the attacks not only endanger the lives of media practitioners but also create a climate of fear and intimidation capable of undermining the media’s role as society’s watchdog.
“A free, independent, and secure media is indispensable to any democratic process, particularly as the country approaches another election cycle,” he said.
He further cautioned that failure to take urgent and decisive action could set a dangerous precedent and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions, discouraging journalists from effectively carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
Also speaking, Mr. Kentebe Ebiaridor of the Environmental Rights Action, who doubles as Project Leader for Oilwatch International, said continued attacks on journalists pose serious threats to the credibility, transparency, and accountability of the 2027 elections.
Ebiaridor called on security agencies to immediately investigate the incidents, identify the perpetrators, and ensure their prosecution without delay. He also urged the Rivers State Government to take proactive measures to guarantee the safety of journalists and media organisations.
He further appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to strengthen preventive mechanisms against such attacks.
In his remarks, Mr. Green Isaac of Relief International Africa emphasised the need for rapid response mechanisms to support journalists facing threats in the line of duty.
Isaac urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the critical role of the media in the electoral process and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure a safe environment for election coverage.
He also called on media organisations and professional bodies to reinforce safety protocols and provide support systems for journalists, particularly those covering sensitive issues.
Isaac advised political actors and stakeholders to uphold democratic values and respect press freedom at all times, cautioning against actions or rhetoric capable of inciting violence against journalists.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the CSOs to protecting civic space and ensuring citizens’ unfettered access to information, stressing that safeguarding journalists is essential to strengthening democracy and ensuring credible elections in 2027.
Other organisations present at the briefing included the Rights Advocacy Development Centre, Voice of Change Campaign, Pius Dukor Foundation, and Chellary Attorneys, among others.
