A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has obtained his expression of interest and nomination forms to contest for the Zamfara North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.
The forms were picked at the Abuja Continental Hotel on April 30, where the party is conducting sales to aspirants seeking various elective offices.
This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Barrister Yazid Salihu Aliyu.
According to the statement, Shinkafi’s decision to join the race followed sustained calls from stakeholders and residents of Zamfara North Senatorial District who urged him to seek the seat for what they described as bold and progressive representation.
The statement noted that since the return of democracy in 1999, the district had not enjoyed effective and purposeful representation in the Senate, thereby denying the people the expected dividends of democracy.
It further argued that the senatorial position had remained concentrated in one part of the district, leaving other local government areas without the opportunity to produce a senator.
The people of the district, the statement added, were demanding that the seat be zoned to Shinkafi Local Government Area in the interest of fairness, equity and inclusiveness.
It stated that such a move would promote unity, peace and development across Zamfara North, which it claimed had suffered marginalisation over the years.
Shinkafi, who previously contested for governor in the state, said his decision to run for the Senate was driven by a desire to contribute to lawmaking and attract federal and state-backed projects to the constituency.
He also pledged to address challenges confronting the zone, including armed banditry, displacement of residents, cattle rustling and kidnapping.
The APC stalwart said he would deploy his political experience to advance the interests of the district in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Shinkafi, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance and Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, also expressed confidence that the APC would retain its dominance in Zamfara State and secure victory in all elective positions in 2027.
He added that the party would once again deliver President Tinubu in the presidential election, as it did in 2023.
