The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed the importance of a free, independent, and responsible press in promoting democracy, human rights, and national development as Nigeria joined the global community to mark World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the NUJ said this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” reflects the realities of Nigeria’s socio-political landscape and highlights the critical role of journalism in fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring accountability.
The union noted with cautious optimism an improvement in relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, citing a decline in cases of intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of journalists.
It commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly its Director-General, for encouraging more professional and constructive engagement with the media, describing the development as a positive step toward enhancing press freedom and democratic accountability.
The NUJ, however, stressed the need to sustain and deepen the progress through continuous dialogue, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law, noting that press freedom remains a constitutional right and a cornerstone for achieving human rights, development, and national security.
The union also urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to emulate the DSS by respecting the rights of journalists and creating an enabling environment for media practice without fear or intimidation.
Reiterating its commitment to responsible journalism, the NUJ called on its members to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards, emphasizing the need for accuracy, fairness, and accountability in reporting.
It further pledged continued engagement with stakeholders to build a safer, freer, and more inclusive media environment, noting that the media and security institutions are partners in promoting peace, protecting human rights, and advancing national development.
