The Catholic Men Organisation of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ojota, Lagos, has urged Nigerian fathers to take active roles in civic engagement and nation-building, stressing that responsible fatherhood is vital to good governance and societal growth.

The call was made during a two-day programme held from May 1 to 3, 2026, to mark the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker and National Fathers’ Day.

Speaking at the event, the Provincial President of CMO, Lagos Ecclesiastical Province, HRH John Aigbokhaode, described civic participation by fathers as a moral obligation rather than a choice.

He charged men to uphold integrity, contribute meaningfully to governance, and raise responsible citizens, warning that the absence of principled men in civic spaces often results in poor societal outcomes.

Aigbokhaode said fathers must position themselves as agents of change both within the Church and in the wider society.

In his welcome address, the Parish Chairman of CMO, Mr Aluor Stephen Agusah, underscored the critical role of fathers as leaders in families and society.

“The Church, our community, and indeed our nation look up to us. Our actions and values determine the direction of the next generation,” he said.

Agusah commended members for their financial support and lauded the executive and planning committee for organising a successful event.

A highlight of the programme was a free medical outreach for parishioners on May 1, featuring screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis and prostate conditions, alongside medical counselling.

Delivering a health talk, Pharmacist Romanus Eze emphasised preventive healthcare and early detection, urging participants to prioritise regular medical checks.

Also speaking, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Simeon Iwu, called on men to adopt discipline and prudence in managing resources amid prevailing economic challenges, describing the medical outreach as timely and impactful.

Deanery Coordinator, Mr John Ilechukwu Maka, noted that fatherhood now extends beyond provision to mentorship and spiritual leadership, urging men to prioritise family bonding, health and moral upbringing.

In a goodwill message delivered on her behalf, the Managing Director of Rex Insurance Plc, Mrs Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, described fatherhood as a sacred responsibility requiring integrity, service and commitment to societal progress.

Chairman of the occasion, Barr Ben Onuoha, commended the transformation within the organisation and pledged continued support for its activities.

The organisation also used the occasion to encourage non-members to join its ranks and participate actively in programmes aimed at promoting faith-based leadership, civic responsibility and community development.

The event ended with a renewed commitment to building responsible fathers, strengthening families and contributing to a better society.
