A major cultural storm is brewing in Nigeria’s creative industry as artlife media productions moves to immortalise the strength, sacrifices and economic power of Nigerian market women in a groundbreaking documentary project inspired by the influence of Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.
The highly anticipated documentary, titled “The Woman Behind the Voices: Leadership, Legacy and the Market Women of Nigeria,” is being produced by renowned filmmaker and media entrepreneur Magnus Oku.
The project, which is already generating conversations within media and cultural circles, will also feature a companion book written by Magnus Oku, with both works expected to be unveiled at a high-profile ceremony involving stakeholders from the film industry, governance, women development groups, academia and the business community.
The documentary is expected to shine a powerful spotlight on the untold stories of Nigerian market women whose daily struggles, resilience and enterprise have sustained families, communities and local economies for generations.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, Magnus Oku said the project became necessary after years of witnessing how market women continue to shape Nigeria’s economic and social realities without receiving adequate historical recognition.
According to him, many of the women battled difficult economic conditions, trained children through higher institutions, built homes and became silent pillars of national survival during periods of hardship.
“This project is beyond film-making. It is about restoring dignity, preserving history and honouring women whose sacrifices built communities and inspired generations,” he stated.
The documentary will reportedly combine cinematic storytelling, interviews, historical archives, cultural references and emotional real-life testimonies from market women across different parts of Nigeria.
Industry observers believe the production could become one of the most important cultural documentary archives ever dedicated to grassroots women leadership and informal economic systems in Nigeria.
Analysts have also pointed out that the project comes at a time when African cinema is increasingly embracing socially conscious storytelling capable of driving conversations around women empowerment, cultural preservation and national identity.
Nigeria’s informal market sector remains one of Africa’s biggest economic lifelines, with women dominating a large percentage of trading and small-scale commercial activities across the country.
Sources close to the production revealed that the companion book will contain detailed reflections, historical accounts, interviews and motivational lessons drawn from the lives and experiences of market women.
The unveiling event is expected to attract major personalities from Nollywood, policy circles, development institutions, women advocacy organisations and international cultural bodies.
Founded on the principles of transformative storytelling and cultural preservation, artlife media production has continued to build a reputation for socially impactful African narratives aimed at inspiring public consciousness and preserving indigenous stories.
