2027: APC may face internal crisis after primaries — Sumner Sambo

Director of Politics at Arise News, Sumner Sambo, has predicted possible internal turmoil within the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sambo said the party could witness widespread dissatisfaction among aspirants following the outcome of its nomination process, especially over issues relating to consensus arrangements and party primaries.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Monday, monitored in Abuja, the political analyst warned that the next two weeks in Nigeria’s political space would be tense and highly charged.
According to him, aggrieved aspirants who fail to secure party tickets may have limited alternatives due to provisions of the Electoral Act restricting post-primary defections.
“As we head into the electoral process, these two weeks that are left are going to be two weeks that the political cycle will be overheated,” he said.
“This is because people who lose out in political parties don’t have the right to defect to any other place. And then the issues of consensus and whether direct primaries will be tested.”
Sambo urged Nigerians to pay close attention to the Electoral Act, alleging that some political parties might violate provisions of the law during their primaries.
“So I want Nigerians to take a careful look at the Electoral Act. Read it very well because most of these political parties will be trying to run foul of that,” he added.
He further noted that members of political parties reserve the right to challenge any alleged violations in court.
“The political parties should be very careful and use their discretion so that they don’t run foul of the law,” he said.
Sambo, however, maintained that the APC could experience the highest level of internal tension in the coming weeks.
“Interesting times lie ahead, and especially in the governing APC, there will be a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth in the next two weeks,” he stated.
