Gunmen kill Army commander, soldiers in Bauchi

Gunmen, yesterday, attacked an Army camp manned by six armed soldiers at Wunti-Dada, a suburb of Bauchi state, killing a Commander and a Sergeant.

It was gathered that one of the soldiers, a sergeant and the Commander of the camp, were killed while a private sustained gunshots on his leg.

An eyewitness, who spoke to our correspondent in confidence said ” one of the attackers was also shot and killed, but the rest of the attackers who came on two Bajal motorcycles escaped when other soldiers at the camp opened fire”

The attack occurred at about 5:45 am.

The eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity informed that the soldiers were taken unawares adding, “I was afraid and did not try to go close to the camp to find out what happened but I think some soldiers might have been injured too”.

The source said he suspected that some of the soldiers were awake “because I heard their voices when I went out”.

Wunti-Dada has been one of the flash points of insecurity in the state and has been known for some anti-social activities, investigation has shown.

However, when contacted on phone, the 33 Artillery Brigade spokesman told our correspondent that, “I am not in a position to comment, please contact Army headquarters in Abuja”, while the Bauchi state Police Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, had earlier asked our correspondent “to contact the Army for details”.

Peoples Daily learnt that the bodies of the fallen soldiers and the wounded have been taken to the Army health facility while that of the dead unknown gunman, was said to have been deposited at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.
