At the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, a powerful symbol of unity and legacy was created as Sebastian Coe led the planting of five trees at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The tree-planting ceremony, held at the championship venue, brought together key athletics leaders, continental officials, and athletes in a moment designed to reflect the enduring impact of the championship beyond competition on the track.
World Athletics President Lord Coe was joined by the President of Ghana Athletics Association. (GAA), Bawa Fuseini and several top African athletics officials as each tree was planted to represent growth, unity, and the lasting legacy of African athletics.
Fuseini planted the final tree of the ceremony and delivered encouraging remarks alongside Coe and federation officials, emphasizing the importance of togetherness and sustainable development within the sport
World record holder Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan was among the top dignitaries who planted some trees.
Team Ghana captain Joe Paul Amoah also took part in the ceremony, planting one of the trees as a symbolic gesture of friendship and lasting connection among the nations participating in the championship.
The event further highlighted Coe’s close interaction with athletes during his visit to Ghana.
Before departing the championship venue, the World Athletics President made time to visit athletes from different countries, reinforcing his reputation as a leader deeply connected to the sport and its competitors.
Athletes and officials from Team Kenya and the Uganda national team were also present with Coe during the ceremony, adding to the continental spirit that has defined the championship in Accra.
