Popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, has reportedly died after an alleged battle with kidney cancer, throwing the Nigerian entertainment industry into mourning.
Sources within Nollywood told our correspondent that the actor passed away on Tuesday afternoon after his health reportedly worsened.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly on the matter, said Ekubo was rushed to a hospital on Monday and placed on life support before he later died on Tuesday.
News of the actor’s reported death sparked shock and grief among colleagues, fans, and admirers across social media.
Ekubo had remained largely absent from public appearances and social media for months, fuelling speculation about his health condition.
Rumours surrounding his alleged illness first surfaced in May 2025 following his prolonged disappearance from online platforms. A check by our correspondent showed that his last social media post was made on December 30, 2024.
The actor rose to fame through his roles in romantic dramas and comedy films, earning recognition as one of Nollywood’s most celebrated actors.
Known for his charisma, versatility, and strong screen presence, Ekubo featured in several blockbuster productions and built a loyal fan base within and outside Nigeria.
Over the years, he received multiple nominations and awards for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
As of the time of filing this report, neither his family nor management had issued an official statement confirming the development.
