Police recover 60 cows, sheep, 2 rifles from bandits in Katsina 

A total of 60 cows and sheep have been recovered from bandits by the police in Jibia and Matazu local government areas of Katsina State.

Thix was confirmed by the state Police Command, in a statement issued on Thursday by DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu.

The command said its operatives and those of sister security agencies, successfully foiled the two separate attacks.

It said that the first attack was on May 12, 2026 in Danya Bakwai, Jibia LGA, and the second occurred on May 13, in Dangani, Musawa LGA.

“On May 12, 2026, at about 1700 hrs, a distress call was received at Jibia Division regarding an attack on Danya Bakwai, a Fulani settlement in Bujaje Ward, Jibia LGA, by armed bandits riding on ten motorcycles.”

The report also indicated that the criminals had gone away with 20 cows and 40 sheep, prompting quick response involving an APC patrol team, the military, KSCWC, and members of local vigilantes, who blocked the bandits’ escape routes.

“The joint team engaged the bandits, forcing them to abandon the rustled animals and flee the scene due to superior tactics and firepower.

“All 20 cows and 40 sheep rustled were successfully recovered. The area is calm, and monitoring continues.

“Similarly, on May 13, 2026, at about 9:45 am, joint APC patrol teams, while on an intelligence-led patrol led by the Divisional Police Officer of Musawa and supported by DPO Matazu, responded to a distress call at Gwarjo Village, Matazu LGA.

“Upon arrival, a gun duel ensued, forcing the bandits to flee the scene. The team proceeded to a black spot at Dangani Village, Musawa LGA, where they intercepted a gang of armed bandits. Another exchange of gunfire followed, during which several bandits escaped the scene with gunshot injuries.

“While scanning the scene, the following items were recovered as exhibits: 2 AK-47 rifles, 6 empty magazines, 42 rounds of live ammunition, 1 brand new TVS motorcycle, 1 GSM handset, 2 military jackets.

“Patrols and surveillance around the area have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks. The area is calm,” the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State,  Ali Umar Fage, has commended the operatives involved for their exceptional act of valour and display of synergy.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the command towards the protection of lives and property, and urged members of the public to continue providing the command with timely and credible information for prompt and decisive action.
