The Kaduna State Government has intensified public awareness and emergency preparedness efforts following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) report by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The report identified Kaduna as one of the states at high risk of flooding, citing forecasts of above-normal rainfall during the 2026 rainy season.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the government emphasized that proactive measures are being strengthened to protect lives and property through coordinated disaster response efforts.
Key details from the 2026 forecast revealed that rainfall duration is expected to begin between May 19 and June 10, and conclude between October 5 and October 21.
Also, a potential 21-day dry spell between June and August may occur, which could paradoxically worsen environmental issues and subsequent flooding.
“The Kaduna State Government is taking this forecast seriously. Early preparedness and public cooperation are essential to reducing the impact of flooding on our communities,” Malam Maiyaki stated.
The Ministry of Information and Culture, in partnership with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), has launched a statewide campaign to educate residents on flood prevention and safety.
The Commissioner urged residents to clear drainages around homes and business premises, cease dumping refuse into waterways, and adopt local flood-control methods, such as the use of sandbags.
Malam Maiyaki called on traditional and religious leaders, media organizations, and civil society groups to support government efforts by promoting environmental sanitation.
Meanwhile, KADSEMA has initiated the following actions
vulnerability assessments in high-risk communities, strengthened coordination for emergency responses, and pre-positioning of rescue equipment in flood-prone areas.
“The safety of citizens remains a top priority, we will continue working with relevant agencies to ensure timely information sharing and effective disaster risk reduction throughout the rainy season,” the Commissioner concluded.
