The Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Alhaji Shehu Gabam has called for a thorough investigation into the recent attack on its National Secretariat in Abuja, calling on security agencies to identify and prosecute not only those directly involved but also who may have sponsored the incident.
In a statement issued by Mr Lawal Ibrahim, Special Adviser on Media to Alhaji Gabam, the party described the attempted invasion of its secretariat by those it identified as suspected hoodlums and criminal elements as a serious threat to public order, party members, and democratic processes.
According to the statement, the attackers were allegedly acting in the interest of individuals seeking to impose themselves as the party’s presidential candidate.
The party pointed out that the attempted attack was aimed at disrupting activities at the secretariat before security operatives waded in and restored order.
.
The SDP commended the swift intervention of the Nigeria Police Force and the Joint Security Task Force for what it described as professionalism and lawfulness in handling the situation.
The statement further disclosed that already several suspects have been arrested, with reports indicating that dangerous weapons and prohibited substances were recovered from them.
“We trust that all investigations will proceed in accordance with the law and established procedures.
“No individual, regardless of status or political ambition, should be above accountability where evidence establishes culpability,” the statement added.
The party also took a swipe at its former presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, over comments he allegedly made against the party’s National Chairman and security institutions, describing them as regrettable and inconsistent with the expected conduct of a political leader.
“Political disagreement must never degenerate into hostility toward institutions charged with preserving public order,” the statement said.
It could be recalled that the SDP just like many other opposition parties have been engrossed in internal crisis with two factions led by Alhaji Shehu Gabam and Prof. Sadiq Gombe claiming to be the authentic National Chairman.
