2027: Why Consolidating Senator Barau I. Jibrin’s Tested Leadership Matters

By Muazu A. Ishaq

As the countdown to the 2027 general elections intensifies, the people of Kano North Senatorial District stand at a historic crossroads. This is not merely another election; it is a defining moment to either consolidate unprecedented gains under a tested, high-performing national leader and proven legislative powerhouse or risk regression through unproven hands and divisive propaganda.

The choice is clear: renew the mandate of Distinguished Senator Barau I. Jibrin CFR, PhD, Deputy President of the 10th Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

Senator Barau has transcended local representation to become one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures. His national stature, legislative and administrative excellence as well as his relentless constituency service have brought visibility, infrastructure, and transformative opportunities to Kano North like never before.

As Senator Barau recently submitted his expression of interest form to the party headquarters formally announcing his intent to contest again for the Kano North senatorial seat, the people of Kano North must therefore not allow mischief makers, desperate politicians, and purveyors of falsehoods to derail them from the paths of progress.

A Distinguished Pedigree of Leadership and Service

Senator Barau’s journey in politics and public service spans decades. He first entered the National Assembly as a Member of the House of Representatives for Tarauni Federal Constituency (1999–2003), where he successfully chaired the Committee on Appropriations and contributed to power sector oversight. He later served as Kano State Commissioner for Science and Technology and held key roles in state investment and properties.

Elected to the Senate in 2015 to represent Kano North, he has been re-elected twice, building a formidable legislative record. In the 10th Senate, he emerged unopposed as Deputy President, bringing his expertise in public finance, budgeting, and governance to the leadership table. His roles reflect deep competence: former Chairman of Senate Committees on Petroleum (Downstream), Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, and Appropriations. He has also served as Secretary of the Northern Senators’ Forum.

Internationally, as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, he champions regional unity, peace, security, and economic integration, elevating Nigeria’s and in particular Kano’s profile on the sub-regional stage.

Senator Barau Jibrin stands out as the highest sponsor of private member bills in the 10th Senate, having sponsored an impressive 29 bills in less than three years. This remarkable productivity underscores his commitment to good governance, institutional reform, and people-centered development.

Among his landmark legislative achievements is the singular sponsorship of the North West Development Commission (NWDC) Bill, which has already been passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This Commission is set to drive massive infrastructural renewal, agricultural revival, youth empowerment, and security interventions across the seven North West states. True to his vision for Kano, the headquarters of the NWDC has been successfully situated in Kano, a strategic decision that positions the state as the economic and developmental hub of the region and will attract significant investments and federal resources for years to come.

Other notable bills he sponsored that have been enacted into law include the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo (Establishment) Act, 2025, and the Maitama Sule Federal University of Education (Establishment) Act, 2024. These institutions will produce generations of skilled graduates in science, technology, education, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Forensic Science, and other critical fields. Additional impactful bills cover areas such as renewable energy, occupational safety, constitutional amendments, government performance and accountability, and cooperative societies reform.

As former Chairman of key Senate Committees (including Appropriations, Petroleum (Downstream), and Tertiary Institutions & TETFund), Senator Barau has brought fiscal prudence, oversight excellence, and strategic vision to national lawmaking.
