The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 20, 2026, for the conduct of the by-election for the Dawakin-Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State.
The by-election follows the recent death of the lawmaker representing the constituency, Hassan Danjuma.
Addressing journalists in Kano, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in the state, Ambassador Abdu Zango, said the election became necessary after the Speaker of the House of Representatives declared the seat vacant in line with constitutional provisions.
According to him, the constituency comprises two local government areas — Dawakin Kudu and Warawa.
He explained that Warawa has 15 registration areas, 303 polling units, and 162,445 registered voters, while Dawakin Kudu also has 15 registration areas, 143 polling units, and 75,623 registered voters.
The REC disclosed that INEC officials had already conducted an assessment visit to the two local government areas and expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness for the exercise.
Zango also revealed that the commission would soon commence the training of ad hoc staff, noting that more than 2,000 personnel would be deployed for the by-election.
“We are looking at more than 2,000 ad hoc staff. We have almost 500 polling units, and at every polling unit, we require a minimum of four personnel. If you multiply that, you will see that we need more staff. I am very sure the NYSC will provide the required manpower for us,” he said.
He further disclosed that non-sensitive materials had already been deployed to the polling areas, adding that the commission was holding meetings with stakeholders, politicians, and security agencies to ensure the peaceful conduct of the exercise.
Speaking on the last phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, the REC disclosed that Kano recorded the highest number of registered voters, with over 210,000 registrations.
“From the last figure we had, because we do it in phases, we have over 210,000 people who have registered in Kano. More than 90 per cent have completed their registration, while the rest registered online. I believe the figure is higher now,” he said.
