The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has dismissed claims of a crisis within the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the party is only experiencing dissenting opinions typical of a democratic setting.
Akume stated this on Friday while speaking with journalists at the airport upon his arrival in Benue State to participate in the APC presidential primary scheduled for Saturday.
According to the SGF, he has consistently informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that there is no crisis in the party in Benue State, but merely opposing voices among members.
He noted that the founding fathers of the APC envisioned a united party and stressed his commitment to ensuring that no faction emerges within the party structure.
Akume also commended President Tinubu’s performance in office, describing it as remarkable and worthy of continued support. He explained that his visit to the state was aimed at mobilising support for the President ahead of the presidential primary.
“The presidential primaries are taking place tomorrow, and we are here to mobilise support for our dear President. He is doing very well. I have told him repeatedly that there is no problem in Benue State,” he said.
“In democracy, there will always be dissenting voices, but the truth is that his work is remarkable. His patriotism, commitment, and inclusive style of governance speak in his favour.
“Most Nigerians have endorsed his performance, and we are confident that our people will vote massively for Mr President. We are also confident that in 2027, President Tinubu will return to the Villa,” Akume added.
Commenting on the conduct of previous party primaries in the state, the SGF said although he was not physically present, he received reports alleging diversion of election materials and other irregularities.
He, however, expressed optimism that future exercises would be conducted more transparently.
“I want the APC to remain a united family. That was the vision of those of us who founded the party. We do not want factions in our party,” he stated.
“I appeal to our supporters in Benue State to remain calm and come out en masse to vote during the presidential primary.
“I believe this election will be different. I strongly believe there will be no diversion of materials. I have participated in elections since 1998, and I know what I am talking about.
“Our people are resilient and know what is right. At the appropriate time, they will make their voices heard,” Akume said.
Also speaking, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Joseph Utsev, acknowledged that grievances may exist within the party but maintained that there are established channels through which such concerns can be addressed.
He urged APC members across the state to come out en masse and participate peacefully in the presidential primary election.
