To address these challenges, there is a need for intentional self-discipline among young people. This includes the ability to control thoughts, manage desires, and make conscious choices about behavior. It also involves avoiding harmful influences such as pornography and negative peer pressure, which can distort values and expectations about relationships and life in general.
In an era defined by rapid social change, digital influence, and shifting cultural values, the concept of a “good life” among young people is being constantly redefined. For many youths today, success is increasingly measured by material comfort, social visibility, and immediate gratification rather than discipline, integrity, and long-term purpose. While change is natural in any society, the direction of this shift raises important concerns about the future of Nigerian youth.
Across campuses and urban communities, there is a growing trend of young people adopting lifestyles that prioritize pleasure over purpose. Some students present themselves to their parents as being fully committed to their education, while in reality, their actions tell a different story. This disconnect not only weakens trust between parents and children but also undermines the true essence of education, which is meant to build knowledge, character, and responsibility.
One of the most worrying developments is the increasing involvement of some youths in relationships driven by financial gain, material support, or social convenience rather than genuine affection or mutual respect. This raises a critical question: what is it that cannot be achieved through honest effort, family support, or patience, that would justify compromising one’s values? While economic challenges are real, resorting to unhealthy shortcuts often leads to consequences that far outweigh any temporary benefit.
The university environment, which should serve as a space for intellectual and personal growth, now reflects diverse and sometimes conflicting intentions. While many students remain focused on their academic goals and future ambitions, others are distracted by social pressures, appearance, and the sense of freedom that comes with independence. However, freedom without responsibility often leads to poor decision-making and long-term regret.
There is also a growing mindset among some young people that they can engage in morally questionable behavior now and “fix things later” in life. This belief is misleading and dangerous. Not all consequences can be reversed, and some decisions leave lasting emotional, psychological, and even physical effects. The idea of unlimited future correction often becomes an excuse for present irresponsibility.
To address these challenges, there is a need for intentional self-discipline among young people. This includes the ability to control thoughts, manage desires, and make conscious choices about behavior. It also involves avoiding harmful influences such as pornography and negative peer pressure, which can distort values and expectations about relationships and life in general.
Equally important is the need for better communication between youths and their families. Many young people make poor decisions not necessarily out of rebellion, but due to lack of guidance, understanding, or support. Creating an environment where honest conversations can take place between parents and children can help reduce many of these challenges.
Mistakes are part of human growth, but what matters most is the willingness to recognize them and make positive changes. Youth is a critical stage of life where habits, values, and decisions begin to shape the future. Learning from errors early can prevent deeper consequences later in life.
Ultimately, the future of any nation depends on the character and values of its youth. A generation guided by discipline, integrity, and purpose will contribute positively to national development, while a generation driven only by pleasure and pressure risks weakening its own future.
As young Nigerians, the responsibility lies with us to make moral choices that will not only define who we are today but also determine the kind of future we will build tomorrow.
