Fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections gathered momentum on Thursday following the resignation of former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, , from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ochei announced his departure from the ruling party in a resignation letter addressed to party leaders and supporters, ending nearly a decade of political association with the APC.
Although the former lawmaker did not disclose his next political destination, his exit is expected to fuel speculations about possible alliances and shifting loyalties within Delta State politics ahead of the next election cycle.
In the letter, Ochei reflected on his years within the APC, stating that he joined the party in 2016 with strong conviction and contributed significantly to its growth and grassroots expansion in Delta State.
According to him, he worked tirelessly alongside loyal party members to strengthen the party’s structures, mobilise support and expand political participation across communities.
He also noted that his involvement in the APC predated the emergence of several individuals who currently occupy influential positions within the party.
“Long before many who currently occupy positions within the party joined the political family they now belong to, I had already committed myself to the ideals of leadership, service, grassroots development, and the pursuit of a better society for our people,” he stated.
Ochei said his decision to leave the APC followed deep reflection and consultations, stressing that political leadership must continue to evolve in line with fairness, inclusion and the aspirations of the people.
While avoiding direct criticism of the party leadership, he suggested that the need for broader political growth and renewed direction informed his decision to “chart a new course.”
The former Speaker maintained that his resignation was not motivated by bitterness or hostility but by his desire to continue pursuing his political convictions and public service goals through another platform.
He also thanked party supporters, stakeholders and associates who stood by him during his years in the APC, urging them to remain peaceful and committed to democratic values as he begins a new political journey.
Ochei’s resignation adds to the growing list of political movements and defections currently reshaping the political landscape in Delta State and across the country as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
