A deepening crisis is threatening to fracture the Kaduna State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as loyalists of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai openly accuse the party’s leadership of betrayal and systemic exclusion following the recent primary elections.
What began as internal friction over governorship and legislative tickets has escalated into a full-blown revolt.
Aggrieved members claim their years of political risk, loyalty, and personal sacrifice were completely cast aside in favor of backdoor arrangements that shut them out of key races.
The internal fallout reached a breaking point following the emergence of Isa Ashiru Kudan as the ADC’s governorship candidate.
Several high-profile aspirants and stakeholders have rejected the process entirely, turning the election outcome into a catalyst for wider rebellion within El-Rufai’s political network.
Ja’afaru Sani, a top governorship aspirant and core ally of the former governor, was among the first to formally reject the results.
Denouncing the primaries as fraudulent, Sani issued an ultimatum warning that he would exit the party if the leadership failed to address the grievances.
His stance has since emboldened a coalition of other candidates, led by Samaila Makarfi, who condemned the exercise as a “sham” marred by widespread irregularities and deliberate manipulation.
However, sources within the camp reveal that the resentment cuts far deeper than just flawed logistics.
The primary grievance stems from a strong perception that Mallam El-Rufai quietly withdrew his backing from the very allies who defended him during his toughest political and legal battles.
This sense of abandonment is particularly acute regarding the plights of Ja’afaru Sani, who is currently under investigation by anti-graft agencies, and El-Rufai’s former Chief of Staff, Bashir Saidu, who remains detained at the Kaduna Correctional Facility.
Loyalists argue that those who risked their reputations and freedom for the former governor have been left completely exposed.
Insiders allege that while El-Rufai publicly maintained neutrality, emissaries linked to him secretly worked behind the scenes to tip the governorship ticket to Ashiru.
However, efforts to manage the fallout have yielded little success.
A peace-making attempt by Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, who met with aggrieved aspirants to assure them her husband was not backing any specific candidate, failed to convince loyalists who insist that events on the ground pointed to a pre-arranged deal.
Furthermore, frustration has mounted over what stakeholders describe as misplaced priorities.
Many accuse the former governor of focusing entirely on securing the political future of his son, Bello El-Rufai, while neglecting the core loyalists who built and sustained his political structure.
The factional crisis has been heavily compounded by El-Rufai’s current detention by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which observers say has created a critical leadership vacuum.
In his absence, proxy groups and competing interests have hijacked the party structure, worsening internal fractures.
Even before the primaries, the state leadership of the ADC was severely divided, recently disowning an unauthorized “ADC Transition Committee” meeting organized by El-Rufai associates.
That meeting ended in violence, with reported gunfire, and remains under active police investigation.
With multiple aspirants rejecting the primaries and trust completely eroded within the El-Rufai camp, political analysts warn that the Kaduna ADC is on the brink of a major split that could completely derail its prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
