The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has argued that effective leadership requires the ability to confront challenges, stating that presidential hopefuls must demonstrate resilience in difficult circumstances.
Speaking during a media chat with journalists in Abuja on Monday, Wike took a swipe at Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of preferring comfortable situations rather than tackling tough political realities.
According to the minister, Nigeria’s numerous challenges demand leaders who are willing to endure criticism and remain steadfast in the face of adversity.
“Peter Obi likes food is ready. Mama put, I don’t want struggling. Look, this country, there are challenges,” Wike said.
Drawing from his political experience, the former Rivers State governor recalled remaining in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite internal disputes and political pressures.
He noted that even when confronted with opposition from fellow governors and party stakeholders, he chose to stay and fight rather than abandon the platform.
Wike maintained that leadership is not defined by wealth or popularity but by the capacity to confront obstacles and make difficult decisions.
He also reflected on the criticism he received after assuming office as FCT minister, saying he endured sustained attacks but remained focused on his responsibilities.
According to him, anyone aspiring to lead Nigeria must possess the determination and courage needed to address the country’s complex political and economic challenges.
“Face the challenges you have. Now, what makes you a leader? What makes you a man? Leadership. You remember when I came here as a minister. There is no abuse I did not get,” he said.
