Nasarawa LP crisis deepens as factional chairman seeks security intervention

Date:

Fresh signs of unrest have emerged within the Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa State as factional chairman, Alexander Ombugu, has called for security intervention over what he described as threats linked to ongoing internal party disputes.
Speaking with journalists in Lafia during the weekend, Ombugu suggested that the development may be connected to his position on contentious issues within the party and his involvement in the recently concluded primary elections.
While withholding the identities of those he suspects, the LP chieftain said he possesses information that would be made available to security agencies to aid investigations and prevent any compromise of the process.
He maintained that his conduct since joining partisan politics has been guided by the constitution of the Labour Party and the laws of Nigeria, stressing that he has consistently advocated transparency and due process in party affairs.
According to him, the situation highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to take proactive measures to prevent political intimidation and ensure the safety of political actors.
Ombugu appealed to security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and provide adequate protection, insisting that he has done nothing to warrant hostility from any individual or group.
The incident adds another layer to the internal challenges facing the Labour Party in Nasarawa State amid heightened political maneuvering and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
