The Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, has taken decisive action following the relegation of Bayelsa United from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), dissolving the club’s board and sacking the entire technical crew.
Governor Diri announced the sweeping changes in response to the club’s disappointing performance that saw the Prosperity Boys drop to the Nigerian National League (NNL) at the end of the season.
The governor said the move was part of efforts to reposition the club and ensure its immediate return to Nigeria’s top-flight football league.
To facilitate the restructuring process, Diri disclosed that an interim management committee would be constituted to oversee the affairs of the club and drive its reorganisation.
“The relegation of Bayelsa United is unacceptable given the investments and support provided by the state government,” the governor stated.
“We must take urgent steps to rebuild the club and restore it to its rightful place in the NPFL.” He added.
He further directed all affected board members, coaches and officials to hand over all club property in their possession to the Commissioner for Sports Development without delay.
The dissolution marks a significant turning point for Bayelsa United, a club that has enjoyed periods of success in Nigerian football but endured a difficult campaign that ultimately ended in relegation.
With the expected appointment of an interim management team, attention will now shift to rebuilding the squad, strengthening the club’s structure and mounting a strong challenge for promotion back to the NPFL at the first attempt.
The Bayelsa State Government remains optimistic that the reorganisation will provide a fresh start for the club and restore confidence among supporters ahead of the new season in the NNL.
