A young man, Ibrahim Baba, is alleged to have killed his neighbour, Abubakar Ahmad, following a heated argument over an old water container in the Sabon Titi area of Sokoto.
According to family members, trouble started when Abubakar picked up a discarded water container left at a public water-fetching point, cut off its top, and began using it.
The owner of the container, a female, was said to have later confronted him and demanded payment, arguing that it had value since it was now in use.
Abubakar reportedly agreed to pay ₦1,500, but the woman refused the offer.
Another relative tried to intervene and settle the matter by paying on Abubakar’s behalf, but the woman insisted that only the person who took the container could make the payment.
The woman then reported the matter to her eldest son, Ibrahim Baba.
Hours later, on Wednesday night, Abubakar came out of his house to urinate., when according to witnesses, Ibrahim confronted him at that moment, and the altercation escalated, leading to Abubakar’s death.
Security operatives had since launched an investigation into the incident.
The deceased’s brother, Umar Ahmad, said Abubakar left behind one wife, two children, and a heavily pregnant widow.
The case has drawn attention to how minor disputes can quickly turn tragic, with a cross section of the residents calling for calm as authorities continue their probe.
The spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai told our Correspondent in Sokoto on Thursday night, “Yes the case is with us but the suspect is at large while investigations are still on.”
