The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Muslim Forum has called on political leaders at all levels to use the occasion of Democracy Day as a period of reflection and accountability, urging them to prioritise justice, security and the welfare of citizens.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Amir and Chairman of the Forum, Prof. Ahmad Bello Dogarawa, the group noted that while democracy remains an important system for promoting participation, accountability and public welfare, its true value lies in its ability to improve the lives of the people.
The Forum explained that Islam recognises the importance of leadership and political organisation in maintaining order, protecting rights and promoting societal welfare. It added that governance should serve the common good by bringing people closer to benefits and away from harm.
According to the statement, many contemporary Muslim scholars view participation in democratic processes as permissible and, in some cases, necessary when it advances justice, protects human dignity, reduces harm and promotes the public interest.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the Forum acknowledged the significance of Democracy Day but expressed concern over the challenges confronting the country, including insecurity, violence, displacement and economic hardship. It noted that many Nigerians continue to face rising living costs, unemployment and difficulties in accessing quality education, healthcare and other essential services.
The statement specifically highlighted the security situation in parts of the North-West and North-East, where lives and property have been lost to violence, while many families have been forced to flee their communities.
The Forum questioned whether the current realities align with the aspirations of democratic governance and urged political leaders and legislators to assess whether they are building the kind of democracy that future generations would be proud to inherit.
Prof. Dogarawa emphasised that leadership is a trust and responsibility rather than a privilege, stressing that leaders would ultimately be accountable for their actions and decisions. He urged public office holders to remain committed to justice, compassion and service to the people.
The statement further noted that the purpose of leadership is to establish justice, preserve security, protect rights, defend the oppressed and prevent corruption and disorder, rather than accumulate wealth or seek personal glory.
The Forum therefore called on those in positions of authority to continually evaluate their performance and renew their commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.
“Democracy Day should not only be a time for celebration but also an opportunity for reflection and accountability,” the statement said, adding that political power is temporary while accountability before God remains certain.
The Forum concluded with prayers for Nigeria’s leaders, seeking divine guidance for good governance, justice, security and national stability.
