Poor turnout, late materials arrivals overshadow Adamawa council polls

The local government elections held across Adamawa State during the weekend were overshadowed by low voter participation and complaints over delayed deployment of electoral materials in several polling areas.
The exercise, conducted by the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC), was aimed at electing chairmen for the state’s 21 local government councils as well as councilors for the 226 political wards.
Despite the generally peaceful atmosphere recorded throughout the state, voter turnout remained significantly low in many polling units, raising concerns about declining public interest in local government elections.
Observers and residents in different parts of the state reported sparse attendance at voting centres, with some polling units witnessing only a trickle of voters several hours after accreditation and voting commenced.
Adding to the challenges were reports that election materials either arrived late or failed to reach some polling units on schedule, disrupting the voting process in affected communities.
ADSIEC Chairman, Alhaji Muhammed Umar, acknowledged receiving reports of logistical shortcomings in certain areas, despite efforts by the commission to ensure seamless distribution of materials before the commencement of voting.
Speaking to journalists shortly before noon, Umar said the commission had begun verifying the complaints and was taking steps to address any gaps identified in the course of the exercise.
“We have received reports from some areas regarding delayed or non-arrival of materials, and we are carrying out checks to ascertain the facts and provide the necessary remedies,” he said.
Notwithstanding the challenges, election activities proceeded peacefully across the state, with no reports of violence, disruption, or major security incidents.
Some stakeholders commended the conduct of the exercise, arguing that the logistical difficulties experienced were not sufficient to undermine the overall credibility of the polls.
Among those who assessed the election positively was the Chairman of Yola North Local Government Area, Hon. Jibril Jimeta, who is seeking re-election for a second term.
Speaking after casting his vote in Yelwa Ward, Jimeta admitted that voter turnout was below expectations but noted that voter apathy has become a recurring issue in elections across the country.
He maintained that while more citizens should have participated in the process, the deployment of election materials and the general conduct of the poll were satisfactory under the circumstances.
The election results are expected to determine the leadership of local councils across Adamawa State for the next tenure, even as observers continue to evaluate the impact of the logistical setbacks and low voter participation on the credibility of the exercise.
