The Police in Sokoto State have impounded 32 unregistered vehicles as they begin a crack down on
vehicles without plate numbers, covered plate numbers, and other related traffic offences.
The operation was ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan, to be carried out by police commands nationwide.
To give immediate legal effect to the exercise and serve as a strong deterrent to violators, the state police command has activated a mobile court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Isah Idris Marafa, for swift prosecution of offenders.
The has imposed fines and penalties on erring motorists in line with the law.
The state Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, personally supervised the operation.
He later told journalists that the IGP’s directive is aimed at enhancing national security, reducing vehicular crimes, and restoring sanity on Nigerian roads.
“Vehicles without proper identification, including those with covered or defaced plate numbers, have become tools for criminal elements. This enforcement is non-negotiable,” Shaffa stated.
“I call on the good people of the Caliphate to remain law-abiding and cooperate fully with the police in this exercise to sanitize our roads. Let no one mistake our resolve; this is about the safety of all.”
The Commissioner reaffirmed that the crackdown would continue in earnest across all local government areas of the state until full compliance is achieved.
He advised vehicle owners who have not yet obtained proper registration or renewed their number plates to do so without delay.
