PDP dominates Adamawa council poll despite Fintiri’s defection to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demonstrated its enduring grassroots strength in Adamawa State by securing victories in all 20 local government areas where results of the council elections have been announced.
The outcome comes months after Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a political development that had raised questions about the opposition party’s future in the state.
With only the Numan Local Government Area election yet to be concluded following its postponement, the PDP has already established a commanding lead in the council polls conducted across the state.
Political observers note that the party’s impressive performance may be linked to arrangements made before Fintiri’s switch to the APC. Many council chairmen seeking re-election had already secured endorsements under the PDP platform and chose to remain in the party despite the governor’s departure.
Although several political parties participated in the election, none succeeded in mounting a significant challenge to the PDP’s dominance at the grassroots level.
Reacting to the outcome, the PDP’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Adamawa State, Chief Maurice Vunobolki, described the results as evidence that the party continues to enjoy widespread support among the electorate.
He congratulated the newly elected council chairmen and praised party members for their commitment throughout the campaign period.
The election was conducted by the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC), which is now focused on completing the process in Numan Local Government Area.
Among those elected is Jibril Ibrahim Jimeta, who emerged victorious in Yola North Local Government Area.
The results are expected to boost the morale of PDP supporters ahead of future electoral contests and may reshape political calculations in Adamawa as parties begin positioning for the 2027 general elections.
