FEAD lists achievements

The Federation and Elites Athletes Department (FEAD) of the National Sports Commission (NSC) has listed out its achievements in the year under review with the promise to continue to promote and support Nigerian athletes to do well in local, national and international tournaments.

The Deputy Director in the department, Mallam Caleb Gidado in a chat with our correspondent in Abuja said apart from football which enjoys wide publicity among Nigerians, athletes in other sports are also flying the country’s flag aloft in competitions they have participated in. He said the athletes have continued to make the country proud in major competitions around the world.

He said “If you have been following events, you will discover that most of our teams that go out for international competitions have been doing the nation proud. The football men (Super Eagles) were able to move to the next round of 16 which is quite an achievement and we are hoping that in future, they will move to the round of eight and even the finals. The ladies (Falconets) won the game (final against Germany) but lost in the politics of whistling.”

Gidado added that the wrestling, handball, Paralympics athletes and shooting teams have all performed wonderfully well in international meet with medals and trophy to show for their efforts. “The wrestling team went out and came back with medals; handball team went out and came back with world trophy. Our Paralympics athletes went out and came back with medals so also is the shooting team in the year under review.

Our outings in both the Youth Olympics game in Gaborone and the Commonwealth Games you will agree with me that are fantastic and are worth commending. We also have other federations warming up to go out for international competitions coming up in Kazakhstan, Tunisia and Russia before the year ends.”
