Taraba journalist gets July 2 hearing after six months in custody

After spending six months in custody without trial, Taraba-based journalist Gabriel Olayinka is finally set for a definitive hearing.
The Upper Area Court II in Jalingo on Wednesday ordered an accelerated hearing for his case, fixing July 2, 2026, for the commencement of the trial.
Olayinka is standing trial over an alleged criminal breach of trust, following a complaint filed against him by a citizen, Mr. Isa Jubri. He has remained in prison custody since his arrest.
During the court session, the prosecution counsel, Barrister D.G. Tukura, requested more time, stating that he required three different banks to produce statements of account and other essential documents, alongside key witnesses.
However, the defense counsel, Barrister Longs Lugnan of P.D. Pius & Associates, strongly opposed further stalling, accusing the prosecution of repeatedly failing to present substantial witnesses.
“Justice delayed is justice denied. This matter has suffered prolonged delay while my client remains in prison. We pray for an accelerated hearing,” Lugnan stated.
The presiding judge, Hon. Lawan Jika, sustained the defense’s prayer and adjourned the matter to July 2 for a definite hearing.
In a separate but related development, a State High Court sitting in Jalingo also heard Olayinka’s application for a review of his bail conditions on Wednesday.
The prosecution counsel, Barrister Tukura, requested an extension to respond to the application, citing technical challenges with his electronic work device.
Consequently, the High Court adjourned the bail review hearing to July 6, 2026.
