Sokoto Govt settles N3bn arrears of students scholarship grant
From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
The Federated Organisation of Sokoto State Students’ Associations says the state government has paid about N3 billion scholarship arrears inherited from the previous administration.
According to the outgoing President of state students’ umbrella body, Yusuf Sabiu, the only unpaid scholarship grant now is that of the current 2025/2026 academic session.
Sabiu, popularly known as ‘no revenge’, made this known this on Monday in Sokoto at a press conference to mark the end of his tenure.
He said that the non payment of the scholarship grant by the last administration had greatly hampered the educational pursuits of students from the state studying both within and outside Nigeria.
“Happily, that’s now history, as the education-friendly administration of Gov. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto had paid off the liabilities to our members.”
Sabiu applauded the governor for ensuring the steady payment of the scholarship arrears of all the students from the state both within and outside the country.
He said, ” The only outstanding fees are those for the current 2025/2026 academic session and we really cherish this invaluable benevolent gesture of Gov. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto.
“All the benefitting students for the season concerned had since been verified and payment is expected to start soon.
“We have nothing to say to the Governor but thank you. We however want him to please restore the usual financial assistance for the running of the association to the incoming executives.
“We weren’t able to enjoy that gesture like the previous executives but we are appealing to our kind-hearted Governor to please come to the aid of our incoming successors.”
