Police neutralize bandit in Sokoto, recover rifle, ammunition

in a bid to tackle emerging security threats across the state,  the Sokoto State Police Command has recorded significant operational breakthroughs against violent crimes,  following the successful neutralization of a suspected bandit.
Operatives of the command also recovered one AK47 in the aftermath of a foiled attack on Daraye Village, Wamako Local Government Area.
This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Sokoto by the spokesperson of the command, DSP Ahmad Rufai.
It said, “At about 01:35 hours on July 4, 2026, the Command received  distress call reporting that a large number of heavily armed bandits were attacking Daraye village.
“Operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the VCRU, and other tactical teams were mobilized to reinforce the Wamakko Divisional Police Officers on the ground. Upon arrival, the team aggressively engaged the assailants in a fierce and prolonged gun duel.
“Demonstrating superior tactical proficiency, the operatives successfully overpowered the bandits, forcing them to abandon their mission and retreat in disarray into the  forest, with several bullets wounds.
“During a comprehensive combing of the bushes, operatives neutralized one bandit and recovered the one AK-47 rifle and one magazine containing 28 rounds of live ammunition.”
The command said confidence-building patrols are currently underway across the area to reassure residents and deter any further criminal activity.
It added that all Divisional Police headquarters around the area have been placed on high alert and directed to remain vigilant for any injured suspects who may attempt to flee into their jurisdictions for medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, has commended the gallantry of the officers involved and reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to eradicating banditry and ensuring the safety of lives and property within the state.
