Senator Victor Umeh has criticised former Ali Modu Sheriff over his comments on the electoral prospects of Peter Obi, accusing him of relying on outdated and divisive political narratives.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored in Abuja, Umeh was reacting to Sheriff’s claim that Northerners would not support Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), because he is allegedly divisive.
The Anambra Central lawmaker argued that Nigeria has moved beyond politics built on regional and ethnic divisions, insisting that attempts to revive old sentiments would not advance national unity.
According to Umeh, comments suggesting that the North should reject Obi amount to efforts to stir unnecessary political tensions and undermine the country’s progress toward reconciliation.
He described Obi as a peaceful and non-violent leader committed to national renewal, saying the former Anambra State governor has consistently advocated dialogue, unity and positive change.
Umeh maintained that Nigerians are increasingly focused on competence and national development rather than divisive politics, urging political actors to embrace messages that promote healing and strengthen the country’s democratic future.
