INEC, YIAGA Africa Launch Mega Voter Registration Centre in Abuja Ahead of 2027 General Election

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in partnership with YIAGA Africa, has inaugurated a Mega Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) Centre at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja to boost voter registration and encourage wider participation in the 2027 General Election.

The initiative, supported by the European Union under the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN II) Programme, is designed to increase access to voter registration for eligible Nigerians, particularly residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, the leadership of YIAGA Africa said the partnership with INEC aims to intensify public awareness on voter registration while making the registration process easier and more accessible for eligible citizens.

The briefing also highlighted the activities of the Mega CVR Centre, the extension of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise, and the introduction of self-service online voter registration.

Addressing journalists, INEC National Commissioner supervising the FCT, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, described the launch of the Mega CVR Centre as a demonstration of the Commission’s commitment to expanding voter registration and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to him, the centre will operate from July 13 to July 26, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily.

Haruna explained that the ongoing exercise represents the third and final phase of the Continuous Voter Registration in the FCT, following its suspension in October 2025 to enable preparations for the February 2026 FCT Area Council election.

He said the exercise provides the final opportunity for eligible residents to register or update their voter information before the 2027 general election.

The National Commissioner disclosed that 31,835 new voter registrations had been successfully completed across the FCT since the commencement of the third phase of the CVR exercise.

He noted that the Mega Registration Centre was established to increase access to voter registration, reduce congestion at registration centres, ease the registration process, and ensure that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to register because of distance or overcrowding.

“This initiative reflects our determination to make the registration process more accessible, efficient and citizen-friendly,” Haruna said.

He urged Nigerians who have attained the age of 18, as well as those seeking to transfer their voter registration, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), or correct their personal details, to take advantage of the ongoing registration exercise.

Haruna also announced that INEC has introduced an online self-service voter registration platform that enables eligible citizens to begin and complete their registration electronically, including biometric capture.

According to him, the innovation is expected to make voter registration faster and more convenient, reduce overcrowding at registration centres, improve service delivery, and provide easier access for young people, students, persons with disabilities, workers with demanding schedules, and citizens living in remote communities.

He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering a transparent, credible, inclusive and technology-driven electoral process.

The National Commissioner expressed appreciation to YIAGA Africa and the European Union for supporting the initiative, noting that their partnership has contributed significantly to expanding voter registration opportunities and strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
