The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Imo State has called for a thorough investigation into the violent disruption of a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) meeting in Owerri, condemning the incident as an assault on democracy.
In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mac-Donald Amadi, the ADC alleged that more than 20 armed thugs stormed the NDC meeting at Umuoyima Town Hall in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area on Tuesday, attacking participants and damaging property.
According to the party, several people sustained injuries during the attack, while chairs and public address systems at the venue were destroyed.
The ADC said politics should never become a justification for violence, stressing that all political actors in the state have a responsibility to promote peace and democratic engagement.
The party maintained that elections should be contested through ideas and policies rather than intimidation, thuggery or the use of weapons.
It also urged political stakeholders and youths in Imo State to reject violence and embrace issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
The opposition party further called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and their alleged sponsors, and ensure they are brought to justice.
