Insecurity: FG more determined to end terrorism, banditry – SGF

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF) Senator George Akume, has assured Nigerians that the federal government is more determined to end terrorism and banditry in the country more than ever before.

Senator Akume, who spoke at the Peace and Security Summit Award in Abuja, organised by Thursday, called on the media to assist the federal government in their reportage and assist the military and other stakeholders in the fight against insecurity.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the SGF, Mr Aminu Sani Yar’Gaya, said, “We are concerned about reportage of banditry and terrorism in the country.

“We are not saying attacks should not be reported but all sides should be reflected.

“Stories of terrorism should be reported in a fair manner on the parts of our gallant military and the victims. Govt is doing a lot regarding fight against terrorism and banditry and we are determined to do more”.

Convener of the summit, Jennifer Serrano, said the summit couldn’t have come at a better time when the country is facing security challenges.

According to her, all Nigerians must come together to support government’s effort to bring terrorism amd banditry to an end.

The House Committee Chairman for Defence, Honourable Benson Jimi,
who also spoke at the occasion, said the Legislatures remain open to partnership that will strengthen our laws, deepen national cohesion and ensure lasting peace for generations to come.

Represented by the his deputy, Honourable Ahmad Alitu Kalambaina, he said at a time when the nation faces deepening security and social challenges, the summit of peace scholars, policymakers and practitioners is not just time but also essential.

He said, “In our society, peace and security are not just words, they are the true foundation of unity. Without peace, our laws and policies cannot work. As lawmakers, who make laws that safeguard everyone. We must build a country where every person feels safe in their home and community.

“Hosting this summit underscores the recognition that the primary business of government is law and order, and by government, i mean the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary.

“This security summit is an important part of the ongoing engagements with Stakeholders on the security concems of our nation.

“Let me say that, today’s event represents a significant step towards redefining the national security arrangements for peace and unity of our country.

“Effective security of a society is dependent on the level of security consciousness of the citizens and the strength of the understanding that exists between the Security Agencies and the community.

“Therefore, our inputs to security and curbing of crime in our country has even become more imperative considering our current national security challenges in which kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, transnational crimes, terrorism and other organized crimes have evolved to threaten our national values and over-all progress as a nation”.
