United States President, Donald Trump on Sunday presented the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy to captain Rodri Hernández following Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
Walking onto the pitch alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump faced a loud mix of intense boos and cheers from the 82,000-person crowd. After distributing runner-up medals to a devastated Argentinian side, Trump handed football’s ultimate prize to the Spanish team and briefly stayed on the podium to join their official championship photos.
It marked the first time the Spanish side are winning the World Cup in 16 years after their triumph in South Africa in 2010. Lionel Messi was left in tears after seeing his dream of lifting a second Worlf Cup trophy, probally in his last World Cup appearance, dashed.
France and real Madrid forward, Kilyian Mbae was awared the Golden Boot of the tournament while Spanish captain, Rodri was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the competition.
While Trump did not give a formal, microphone-led stadium speech directly on the pitch during the trophy lift, he made extensive, high-profile statements regarding the final and the tournament during a pre-match address and an exclusive post-match interview.
Following the final whistle, Trump praised the 48-team tournament, declaring the 2026 World Cup “one of the greatest events of any kind ever held.” He commended La Roja, stating that the Spanish team “played better in the final” while also offering praise to Argentina for an incredible championship match.
Reflecting on the sports culture shift, Trump recalled his early conversations with FIFA’s president: “I said ‘That’s crazy, we’re not a soccer country.’ And it turns out we are a soccer country.” He added that the massive influx of international fans showcased the United States “in a different light.”
In his pre-match remarks, Trump emphasized the staggering scale of the tournament, comparing the logistics of hosting the multi-city event to executing “78 Super Bowls” back-to-back.
The trophy presentation also brought political and sports diplomacy into the spotlight, capping off a tournament filled with unique off-pitch moments.
As Trump and Infantino walked out for the ceremony, a heavy wave of jeers cascaded from the stands. However, the crowd quieted down once the presentation of individual awards and team medals began.
Trump watched the high-stakes final from a glassed-in luxury suite alongside First Lady Melania Trump. He hosted several world leaders, including Spain’s King Felipe VI, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The ceremony served as a final meeting between Trump and Infantino after Trump heavily lobbied FIFA earlier in July to overturn a red-card suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. At a reception prior to the final, Trump joked about the controversy, noting that because the U.S. ultimately lost to Belgium, “there’s no controversy… they won the game, and our team had all of its players.”
On the pitch, Spain conquered Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. A dramatic 106th-minute strike from substitute Ferran Torres, assisted by Nico Williams, broke the deadlock and shattered the defending champions’ hopes of a repeat. The victory secures La Roja their second World Cup title, capping off an unprecedented defensive masterclass under manager Luis de la Fuente.
The Individual Award Winners
Spain heavily dominated the individual honors at the post-match ceremony, claiming three out of the four major individual diadems.
Golden Ball (Best Player): Rodri (Spain). The midfield maestro orchestrated Spain’s transition, completing a tournament-record 692 out of 729 attempted passes (94% accuracy) and logging 919 high-intensity runs.

Best Young Player: Pau Cubarsí (Spain). The 19-year-old defensive prodigy won the award over teammate Lamine Yamal after anchoring the tightest defense in modern tournament history.
Golden Boot (Top Scorer): Kylian Mbappé (France). Despite France bowing out in the semi-finals to Spain, Mbappé claimed the prize by scoring an astonishing 10 goals in eight matches.
Luis de la Fuente became the oldest manager to lift the World Cup at 65 years and 29 days. On the opposite end of the spectrum, 19-year-old winger Lamine Yamal made history as the first-ever teenager to win both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.
The tournament solidified Spain’s era of global dominance, echoing their historic run from 2008–2010 by holding both the European and World Cup trophies simultaneously.
How Spain Tactics Stifled Argentina
Manager Luis de la Fuente deployed a masterclass system that prioritized locking down Argentina’s creative hubs.
Spain’s left winger, Álex Baena, worked tirelessly with midfield anchors Rodri and Mikel Merino to construct a defensive triangle whenever Messi moved to the right side.
They maintained an ultra-compact shape. blocked all progressive central lanes to Julian Álvarez, starving Argentina’s front line of service. Lionel Messi was limited to a meager 15 touches in the first half and just 54 touches over the entire 120 minutes. He never found a pocket of space to unleash his lethal left foot.
Argentina’s frustrations boiled over in the first half of stoppage time when Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow card for a dangerous challenge that sent 19-year-old Pau Cubarsí airborne. Down to 10 men, Argentina was forced into an entirely defensive block.

Messi dropped directly to the grass, staring blankly into the sky as the reality of the defeat set in. In a show of ultimate respect, half a dozen Spanish players, including young Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal, walked over to embrace and console the crying legend.
As Argentina walked up to collect their runner-up medals, television cameras captured Messi struggling to even force a smile, looking visibly broken. With gold confetti fluttering over the Spanish champions, Messi walked through a corner exit with hunched shoulders and a glum expression—bringing a poignant end to his historic World Cup career.
