NNPP threatens N10bn suit against INEC despite restoration of party logo

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has threatened to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for N10 billion, accusing the electoral body of delaying compliance with a court order despite restoring the party’s original logo on its official portal.
The party’s National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, made the announcement on Tuesday during a press conference in Abuja, where he welcomed INEC’s decision to restore the NNPP’s authentic symbol, described as the “Basket of Fruits on the Nigerian Map.”
Major said the restoration affirmed the legitimacy of the party leadership under him and the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
According to him, the dispute arose after a faction allegedly loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Elder Buba Galadima attempted to take over the party’s structure, resulting in the upload of a different logo on INEC’s portal.
He said the development forced the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to approach the Federal Capital Territory High Court, which ordered INEC to restore the original logo and upload the recognized NWC within 72 hours.
Major, however, accused the electoral commission of failing to fully obey the court’s directive, particularly the aspect requiring it to upload the recognized party leadership and file an affidavit of compliance within 14 days.
“Because of INEC’s disobedience and delay, we have suffered damages. Our lawyers have been instructed to file a N10 billion suit against the commission,” he said.
The NNPP chairman also disclosed that the party had intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections by uploading 355 National Assembly candidates, including placeholders, on the INEC portal.
He added that the party had equally submitted a placeholder presidential candidate in line with INEC guidelines, while the upload of governorship and State House of Assembly candidates was ongoing and expected to be completed by August 8, 2026.
Major further appealed to youths, women and Nigerians in the diaspora to join the party, saying the NNPP remained committed to justice, equity and the vision of building a better Nigeria.
